Eden Prairie utilized an effective ball-control running game to wear down Lakeville North en route to a 28-7 win and the Class 6A Championship at Prep Bowl XXXI at the Metrodome. The win for the Eagles was their eighth state football championship, second consecutive, and sixth title since 2000.
The Eagles took the opening kickoff and marched 77 yards in 11 plays to take an early 7-0 lead. Junior running back Dan Fisher capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, Eden Prairie was pinned deep in their own territory but proceeded on a 14-play, 96-yard touchdown drive consuming 6:13. The final play of the drive resulted in a five-yard touchdown plunge by senior quarterback Grant Shaeffer.
Eden Prairie outgained Lakeville North 214-63 in the first half, and owned the time of possession battle by hanging on to the ball for 17:34 of the 24 minutes in the first two quarters.
It was more clock control and run domination for Eden Prairie in the second half. Senior running back Jacob Woodring scored for the Eagles on a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to extend the lead to 21-0. Junior running back Anthony Anderson capped the scoring for Eden Prairie on a six-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter.
Fisher led the Eagles’ ground attack with 148 yards on 31 carries. Junior Charlie Venable rushed nine times for 69 yards. Eden Prairie converted 12-of-15 third down opportunities and ran for 309 yards on 64 rushes as a team.
For the Panthers, senior quarterback Zach Creighton completed 12-of-20 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. Lakeville North, which was ranked No. 4 in the final Associated Press poll, finished the season 12-1.
