Defense.
It's always preached as a one-way street to championships. As
cliches go, it is one of the most tried, if not true. Just ask Goodhue,
who was stymied by Barnum 43-31 in the 1A final Saturday afternoon. While
an offense can go cold, as Barnum's did at times this season, defense
is about hustle. Bad bounces on the rim are no excuse for a philosophy
that hinges on effort. "We played amazing defense," said Jessica
Newman, a junior guard for the Bombers. "That's what was said in the
locker room, 'We gotta play defense to win our games.'" It is
something that Barnum not just bought into, but something they take
pride in. Several players credited each others' effort on the defensive
end as the reason they came out on top. Goodhue, while trailing only
20-16 at the half, was unable to score any fast break or second chance
points in the first 18-minutes. By the half-way point of the second
half, Barnum had nearly tripled their lead and led 36-21.
The Bombers continued to stifle any easy attempts by Goodhue, while
maintaining control of the boards.
The Bombers out-rebounded the Wildcats 26-21 for the game while forcing
23 turnovers and not allowing a single fast break point.
"These last three days, our offense hasn't been the greatest," said
Katrina Newman. "But our defense has pulled through for us." |
