The Blaine Bengals came into the state tourney on a roll. A six-goal
win over Centennial in the section 5AA final served notice to the
state. Subsequently, the coaches seeded Blaine third behind No. 1 Edina
and No. 2 Eden Prairie. The Bengals first round opponent fared no
better than their last. The Panthers of Rochester Century struggled to
move the puck offensively and keep Blaine out of their zone
defensively. The Bengals shut-down resulted in a 5-0 win that moves
them into the semifinals against the Eagles.
To say that this team feels like underdogs, despite their ranking and seed, is an understatement. There was one smile cracked in the post game press conference and that was by head coach Dave Aus while recalling his feelings after the 7-1 section final win over Centennial; a win he called one of his most satisfying.
The players had similar feelings then, but now are all business. They seem to embrace if not an underdog role, certainly the role of the overlooked.
"I wouldn't take him over anybody, skater or goalie." - Blaine head coach Dave Aus on his goaltender Danny Harper who has allowed 1 goal in the past two games.
