Wild horses couldn’t stop the Mustangs; neither could the Packers. Breck rolled past Austin 12-1 in the Class 1A semifinals Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.
Breck coach Rob Little tried to put the lopsided win into perspective. “It’s uncomfortable. All of us, if you’ve coached a long enough have been on both sides of that. It’s not really fun either way. The plus side of it is we had some kids who hadn’t played in the first game that got a chance to play. Leslie Kennedy got her first varsity goal today and it was one of the last goals we got so for her, it’s a great thing for her. But again, it’s uncomfortable, I’m sure for Austin and it was for us at Breck, too.”
Kennedy scored goal number 11 of 12. Hayley Opperman (1), Nicole Patterson (2), Milica McMillen (2), Paige Burgeson (1), Carly Schaeder (1), Jillian Dolliff (1), Kayla Mork (1), Emily Kleidon (1) and Alex Barton (1) all added to the scoreboard. Two were on the power play, three were short-handed.
“We weren’t planning on anything like that,” admitted Little. “We’d spent a little bit of time working on defending their players coming out of the zone. And we stopped some pucks and the kids used some open ice to do some things. I never would have dreamed we would have a first period like that.”
The lead was 7-1 after one period. The Mustangs added five more in the second before calling off the hounds. Little said, “Over time, we’ve been on that end where someone has been gracious with us and we just decided at the end of the second period that we definitely didn’t want to run up the score and score more goals.”
Now it’s time to regroup for a rematch with Alexandria. The Cardinals won an earlier game on December 22 against the Mustangs. And there’s no better stage for revenge than the state championship game.
“We’re happy to be in that game tomorrow. We’re looking forward to playing Alexandria again. We played them earlier in the year and they beat us, so I just hope we have some goals left for tomorrow.”
With the way Breck has played lately, I don’t think that will be a problem.
