The Hornets created an early buzz, but in the end it was Lakeville South swarming to the championship in the Girlsí Class AA Soccer Tournament, defeating Edina 2-1. Player of the year Krista Lundgren led the way.
Lundgren scored her second goal of the game, and the game winner, off a corner kick with 6:32 left in regulation. Olivia Bagnall delivered the corner, and Lundgren deflected it in from inside the 6-yard box.
Edina almost netted the equalizer with 2:22 left. With Lakeville goalie Lindi Steffan caught in no-manís lad, Neredith Finsand headed one just over the crossbar from 7-yards out. That would be the last good chance for the Hornets.
Lakeville needed Lundgren to be the player of the year. She converted in the 26th minute off a pretty play. Madeline Russell dished the ball into the middle of the box, and Lundgren ran on and did an effortless re-direct past Edina goalie Callan Faulkner to tie things up.
The Cougars found themselves digging out of an early hole. Natalie Pastor drilled a free kick from 45-yards out up and over Steffan and into the back of the net just over a minute into the game. But Lundgren and the Cougars had enough to battle back.
This is the first state title for Lakeville South. They finish the season 20-2. Edina falls just short of their 2nd state championship, and wraps up their season with a record of 18-2-2.
