Eagles Soar to Class A Title in Shootout

By Mark Genosky

Blake may have helped de-thrown Mahtomedi, but it’s Totino-Grace that is wearing the crown in Girls’ Class A Soccer.  Totino defeated Blake 2-1 in a shootout to win the title, their 3rd state championship.

Grace scored with less than 3-minutes remaining to force the overtime, and after two scoreless o-t sessions, the game went to a shootout where the difference turned out to be the fist round.  Makinzie Kresbach buried her shot for Totino, while Kate Laxson of Blake fired her shot wide.  Allie Emch, Erin Kastenmeier, Erika Dahl and Lauren Mueller proceeded to all make their shots, clinching the shootout 5-3, and the title for the Eagles.

Mueller may have had the clinching shot for the Eagles, but she wouldn’t have gotten the shot if not for Kastenmeier.  With Totino trailing 1-0 in the 78th minute, she lofted a shot from 24-yards out.  Blake goalie Addie Adams was caught a little too far off her line, and the ball found the back of the net to tie things up.

After a sluggish first 60 minutes for both teams, Blake broke through and scored the first goal of the game in the 71st minute.  Off a corner kick, Anna Sevin served one up right into the middle of the box, about 3-yards off the line.  A rush of Blake players made runs towards the net, and it was Michelle Tremblay who knocked it home.  This came two and half minutes after Blake thought they had already taken the lead.  Again a corner kick from Sevin found its way into the net, but it was called off as Blake players got tangled up with Totino goalie Ann Cassidy.

All this Blake offense came only after a great opportunity by Totino forced the Bears out of hibernation.  A nice pass put the Eagles’ Abby Serreyn in on a one-on-one in the 62nd minute, but she drilled the point-blank shot from 10-yards out right at Adams, who made the easy save.

Blake finishes the season at 20-2, with a highlight knocking off 3-time defending champion Mahtomedi in the state semifinals.  Totino-Grace caps their season with a mark of 18-4-1 and a state title.  The Eagles also hoisted the hardware in 2001 and also in 2002.
