The new state soccer seeding can be branded a success at least in the Class A division. Both the girls and the boy’s finals produced nail-biting, edge of the seat style soccer that should be synonymous with state final soccer.
On the girl’s side Mahtomedi became back to back state tournament winners, the last time that was accomplished for girls Class A soccer was by Totino-Grace in 2001-2002. It is Mahtomedi’s 4th overall state championship. They were previous state champions in 1997, 99, 04. They defeated Benilde-St. Margaret’s 2-1 in kicks from the mark.
Overall in the state tournament Mahtomedi out scored their opponents 6-1, and overall in the play-offs they outscored opponents 19-2. The Zepher’s were lead by juniors Tippy Jordan and Tori Schiltgen, and freshman Brittany Henry. There coaching staff includes the section 3A coach of the year Mike Redmond, and Assistant Coach of the year Mark Hjelle.
The Breck School won its first boys state soccer class A championship with a 1-0 double overtime victory over number one seeded St. Louis Park. The winning goal was scored by senior striker Miles Marmo from the penalty spot. The Mustangs finish the season 18-2-1. This was The Breck Schools third state tournament appearance, the other two coming in 1986 and ’87.
The Mustangs got to the state tournament by knocking off the number one seed and defending state champions Totino-Grace in the section 4A finals. In the play-offs Breck outscored opponents 25-2. The Mustangs are lead by seniors Malmo, Peter VanBrundt, Matt Trusheim, Evan Salone, Charlie Weisman, Brian Crowe, and two senior goalkeepers Ben Freeman and Colin McCarthy. The Head Coach of the Mustangs is George Stuempfig.
The girl’s consolation match between Totino-Grace and St. Cloud Cathedral ended in a 1-1 draw. According to Minnesota State High School League rules, matches can end in a draw if no further advancement is required in the tournament.
In the boy’s consolation match Northfield defeated St. Thomas Academy 2-0.
