St. Thomas Academy and Winona looked like a great matchup to start. The two exchanged blows like heavyweight fighters through the first half to a 19-19 tie. But then at the break, something happened.
St. Thomas Academy came out hot, Winona never really came back out. The Cadets ran away with a 52-24 win in the Class 3A Quarterfinals Wednesday at Target Center.
The Winhawks' shooting was a key factor in their demise. They cooled from 35.3% in the first to 16.7% in the second half and STA went the other way. They improved from 27.6% in the first to 54.5% in the second, led by 15 points from Nate Birr.
The Cadets move on to Thursday's semifinals where they will face Rocori; a team they know well. STA knocked Rocori out of last year's quarterfinals with a 57-51 overtime win. Tipoff is at noon.
